Christian Falsnaes

(born 1980 in Copenhagen, lives and works in Berlin)

The works of Christian Falsnaes are based upon the interaction between audience and artist. He works in various media like painting, drawing, collage, installation and video, but above all he is interested in the context of the work’s genesis: the rituals, dynamics and behaviours which take effect in highly codified social fields like the art world. His works revolve around themes of identity, authority and submission. As a fundamental component, Falsnaes deploys mostly unprepared exhibition visitors in participatory performances, which he documents on video and subsequently shows in a compilation of selected scenes. The unforeseeable and uncontrollable are characteristic of his performances. He doesn’t work with professional actors or an exact script but leaves it up to the audience to execute his directions.
